Bestsellers in
their own right, the two sequels of The Front Runner carry the story up to the present day. The sequels
follow ongoing efforts by Front Runner characters to
make a life for themselves amid conservative America's
growing resistance to the idea of civil rights for gays.
Coach Harlan Brown is there, are are star runners Vince
Matti and Jacques LaFont, lesbian athlete Betsy Heden,
college president Joe Prescott and his wife, two gay
Vietnam veterans who go to work as bodyguards, and other
vivid characters. Notable is the baby born to Betsy by
artificial insemination -- his mother's struggle to
raise him as a single mom, and his emerging importance
as the heir to "The Front Runner" dynasty.
Patricia Nell Warren is currently
working on the fourth and final sequel of The Front
Runner, which will bring the story into the post-9/11
era. It is tentatively scheduled for publication at the
release of the film version of The Front Runner. |
